Last year, McGill landed the respectable 49th spot according to U.S. News & World Report's , and now, it has secured a place in British company Quacquarelli Symonds' (QS)
McGill stole the Quebec show by coming in at 35 while the University of Montreal (UdeM) a bit behind at the 137th spot. It's no wonder Montreal has been ranked the number one.
The QS World rankings dug a little deeper than just overall best schools; they also covered 48 disciplines, sorted into five main subjects, analyzed from 13,138 individual university programs: Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Social Sciences & Management, and Natural Sciences.
McGill placed well in multiple subjects overall. And while UdeM was ranked 102 spots lower overall than its English counterpart, it still ranked in the Top 100 universities worldwide in Life Sciences & Medicine, which is impressive in its own right.
A few of McGill's rankings that are notable: 27th in Life Sciences & Medicine, 30th in Arts & Humanities, 43rd in Social Sciences and Management, and 47th in both Engineering & Technology and Natural Sciences.
The University of Toronto did beat out McGill as the Top school overall in Canada — but just barely — at number 29.
UdeM has been creeping up the rankings in multiple disciplines. 2020 has seen the school move up the proverbial ladder in Life Sciences & Medicine (75th vs. 77th), Engineering and Technology, (109th vs. 113th), along with being one of the Top 100 universities in the world in specific areas like Veterinary Sciences (43rd vs 46th).
As for Concordia, it didn't make the Top 200. Actually, it barely made its way into the Top 500 — coming in at only the 462nd spot. But that's ok, just more room to grow.
Of course, Harvard and MIT put on a good show, but surprisingly, U.S. universities look to be declining in 2020 with fewer rankings in the Top 50 areas of study compared to 2019.
