People can be so unjustifiably cruel to animals, and if you need a reminder of that fact, just listen to the story of Penelope, a female shih-tzu recently brought into the care of the Montreal SPCA.

Last Saturday morning, Penelope was left broken and abused in the parking lot of a Harvey's by Namur metro station. The nine year old shih-tzu lacked any identification and no caretaker was in sight.

With skin and eye injuries, and suffering from both malnutrition and dehydration, Penelope was already in critical condition before she was brought to the Montreal SPCA. Even now, days after her rescue, Penelope's health is still in question, despite the best efforts of the SPCA's veterinarians.

The malignant mistreatment of Penelope by the hands of an unknown Montrealer is beyond reprehensible; to withhold food, water, and medical treatment from a needing canine is a prime example of cruelty towards animals.

But the Montreal SPCA is not letting the Penelope's story end without seeking justice.

Launching an official inquiry, the Montreal SPCA's investigations and inspections department has begun looking into the whereabouts of Penelope's original owners and whoever abandoned her this past weekend.

And they need your help.

Anyone who is able to provide relevant information into Penelope's case that will lead "to the apprehension and conviction of the person responsible for this heinous act of cruelty" will be rewarded with $1000, as stated on the Montreal SPCA website.

When found, the individual in question could be sentenced to up to five years in prison for animal cruelty.

“The neglect that Penelope endured is heart wrenching. We are going to do everything in our power to achieve some form of justice for her, and we are counting on the public’s help to find the person responsible” notes Me Sophie Gaillard, lawyer for the Montreal SPCA’s Animal Advocacy Department.

So, if you have any relevant information on the matter, you can send an email to inspection@spca.com or call directly at (514) 735-2711 ext. 2230. All information given will be kept entirely confidential.
