Premier François Legault, as per usual, held a public briefing to update the public on the novel coronavirus situation in Quebec. Yesterday, there was a major jump in the province's case count due to a past computer error, which added 1,317 missing positive COVID-19 cases to the total. Today, as of May 4, there are 32,623 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Quebec.

Quebec's death toll related to the novel coronavirus has now reached a total of 2,280 victims, which is an increase of 75 since the previous day.

Certain businesses, in all regions of Quebec except the Greater Montreal area, are permitted to reopen again as of today, May 4. A list of exactly which places are starting to open their doors again is available here.

These businesses include retail (not including shopping malls), civil construction companies, and manufacturing.

The first phase of gradually reopening businesses within the Montreal metropolitan area, which includes Laval and on-island suburbs, was planned to begin on May 11, but the Premier announced today that it will be pushed back a week.

So, the new projected date for the reopening of Montreal retail businesses with exterior entrances is now May 18.

Manufacturing and non-residential construction in the Greater Montreal area remain projected to start up again on May 11, though.

Regardless of these reopenings, Legault has stressed that the two-metre social distancing rule must continue to be followed.

You can watch a live feed of the Government of Quebec's press conference on May 4 below.

"As for the gradual deconfinement schedule, we continue to monitor the situation very closely every day. We are making our decisions based on the changing numbers," Legault stated in his recent Facebook post.

Legault specifically said during the press conference that "the situation is under control in the rest of Quebec, outside the Greater Montreal area."

The region of Montreal's COVID-19 case count is now at 16,606.

With these numbers, we can see that Montreal is where over half of the cases in all of Quebec are.

This is why the date for the first phase of the gradual reopening of businesses in the Montreal metropolitan area was pushed back from May 11 to May 18.

The plan to reopen daycares and elementary schools in the Greater Montreal area continues to be projected for May 19, and May 11 for the rest of Quebec.

Schools everywhere else will open May 11 if everything stays the way it is now
