We all get angry at the STM, maybe a little bit more than is justified. Yes, the metro may get delayed more than we like and the lines to recharge your Opus every start of the month are ridiculous, but the STM tries its best, and largely succeeds. Soon, though, the STM is going to be trying even harder to please you, with an investment of $2.7 billion to improve the overall rider experience.\nAs outlined in the STM's three-year capital expenditures program, a document breaking down where the STM will be spending $2.8 billion in funds from 2016-2018, the STM is devoting 73% of the program's total funds (so a bit more than $2.7 billion) on projects directly correlated with customer satisfaction.\nIn a recent STM press release, Philippe Schnobb, chairman of the STM board of directors, went on to say that despite the company accumulating "a $4.3B deficit" over the last few decades, the STM is still "choosing to refurbish its installations, an underlying condition to offering quality service." Aww, thanks guys, we appreciate it.\nAll in all, 43 projects are listed in the STM's 2016-2018 PTI concerning rider satisfaction. Here's a quick rundown of the most important ones, and their price tags:\n$1.1B to buy the new AZUR metro cars (which can hold 8% more riders than the old models).\t$227M for metro station renovations, with $36M specifically reserved for Berri-UQAM station.\t$415M will be put towards upgrading/renovation the stationary equipment found in stations, a part of the STM's Réno-Systèmes program.\t$254M to purchase 258 hybrid buses.\t$43M to create more reserved bus lanes on the island, from 210km to 375km.\t$155M so the iBUS real-time tracking program can finally get launched.\nUnfortunately the STM can't spend money on removing all the shitty people who stand in front of the doors of metro cars and don't get off at a station, or the punks who give their backpack an entire seat. It is nice to know, however, that the STM will be creating more accessible metros, thanks to more elevators being installed (part of the Réno-Systèmes project).
