The STM is cracking down on people who improperly enter the metro.

Anecdotally, I can say I have seen a spike in the number of ticket checks and chases in the metro in the last few months.

Enforcement has definitely become more strict, even brutal.

In a video posted to Facebook Monday afternoon by user Greg Ory, STM officers can be seen bringing a man to the ground and placing him in a chokehold at Concordia metro station.

The reason, according to one witness: he had used his girlfriend's pass instead of his own.

As the man on the ground resists, two men attempt to subdue him. One of the men (dressed in plain clothes) places him in a tight chokehold. The other man (clearly an officer) forefully attempts to inhibit his legs and gather his arms.

The man on the ground appears to panic. He flails his legs in a desperate attempt to break free and alert the officers to his fear before slowly becoming still. According to one Facebook user, the man nearly passes out.

A woman, presumably the girlfriend, can be seen trying to access the struggling man. But another STM officer prevents her from approaching.

Questions abound on Facebook as to whether such force was necessary to arrest a man who had merely used another person's pass.

This incident took place this past Friday evening. The STM has yet to issue a statement.
