Moving to Montreal to start your first year at McGill or Concordia?\nThere's a lot to discover, from cafes to restaurants to bars and more, and we've got you covered.\nTake a look at our unofficial ranking of all of Montreal's downtown residences, from worst to best.\nVisit MTLBlog for more headlines.\nFirst year is an interesting experience, full of contradictions. On the one hand, you're an adult who is ready to tackle higher education while learning to branch out on their own. On the other hand, you're blacking out three times a week and you still haven't learnt to cook for yourself because you're living in rez and therefore are not quite self-sufficient yet.\nFor many, living in rez is an important part of the university experience. In rez, you get to meet tons of new people, go to a lot of parties and finally know what it's like to have Satan for a roommate.\nTo help you pick the best rez, we've made a very subjective and not-at-all definitive ranking of McGill and Concordia rezes. Obviously, everyone has vastly different needs when it comes to a living situation, and will assign different weights to certain criteria such as proximity to school, sociability, food availability, etc.\nThat being said, here's our ranking of McGill and Concordia rezes.\n11. University Hall, McGill\nThis one is a bonus and scores so low because, even though I went to McGill, I've never heard of University Hall, nor did I ever meet a single person who lived there. Working theory: it's not actually a residence but a McGill lab facility.\nView this post on Instagram @notsarahmk how's this for a frosh meme? A post shared by ƒin$ta of $uzanne ƒortier 🌶 (@spicy_martlet_memes) on Aug 29, 2017 at 7:40pm PDT\n10. Jesuit Residence, Concordia\nThis residence is really only handy for people who study at the Loyola campus, and even then, many people prefer to stay at Hingston Hall. On the bright side, all of the rooms are private rooms, so you don't have to deal with annoying roommates.\n9. Douglas Hall, McGill\nThis rez has all of the inconveniences of being "up the hill," without any of the social advantages that come with being in Upper Rez. On the bright side, you can go back to your quiet, cozy rez when the Upper Rez students who have never had a drink in their lives decide to do six shots, puke, and spend the rest of the night screaming with their friends. And your caf looks like something out of Harry Potter.\nView this post on Instagram doug’s fire alarms where u @ ??? Carrefour Sherbrooke, McGill\nAlso known as C4, Carrefour Sherbrooke is a sad little industrial rez with a weird room layout. On the bright side, this rez also has a Starbucks and a Quesada right in the building, so you can make your lonely Saturday nights a little better by eating burritos.\nView this post on Instagram um wow so #repost because we straight up did not know that douglas existed....but anyway, if u lived in cit ur the type of person to major in poli sci, sit in the front row of every one of ur classes and join model UN, environment club, res council, unicef, debate, acapella and quidditch whilst tryna smash everyone in sight that looks like they’re tryna go to law school ....and actually that goes for most of y’all that lived in rvc too except if u lived in rvc on top of those things u also play piano, guitar and harp, sing obnoxiously in public wherever people look like they’re tryna study but then noise complained us for playing music not that loudly every weekend and have a stand up comedy set that’s fucking wack, and actually lastly if u lived in new res u were either French or didn’t want to live in new res A post shared by News Out The RVC Caf (@rvc_caf_updates) on Sep 22, 2018 at 7:20pm PDT\n7. Hingston Hall, Concordia\nI've taken off points because this rez is at the Loyola campus, and therefore annoying to navigate via public transit (step up your bus game, NDG). However, the rezes are actually cozy looking, and on a nice campus.\nPosted by Concordia University Memes on Wednesday, January 22, 2014\nREAD ALSO: Best Montreal Bars For First Year Students\n6. Solin Hall, McGill\nI may be biased, but every single person I've met who stayed in Solin is an actual gem. I've given this rez points for being in a cool borough, and everyone who went there seemed to genuinely enjoy it, but I've taken points off for naaaasty kitchens and the fact that none of your "McGill bubble" friends will ever come to see you.\nView this post on Instagram Let's go back to Rez 👌 A post shared by ƒin$ta of $uzanne ƒortier 🌶 (@spicy_martlet_memes) on Mar 21, 2017 at 3:42pm PDT\n5. La Citadelle, McGill\nThis hotel-style rez is brand-new and actually well-renovated, so you can live out your Suite Life dreams. Bonus points for the beautiful common rooms. However, it's so close to school that leaving your 5-block radius to do anything will seem dauntingly far way.\nView this post on Instagram me: *walks into my class in the education building fully out of breath, sweating from head to toe, twenty minutes late* some hill huh A post shared by Confiture-Approved Memes (@ssmumemes) on Apr 7, 2018 at 5:45am PDT\nREAD ALSO: Best Cafés Near Montreal's Concordia University\n4. RVC, McGill\nThe only reason that Royal Victoria College scores so high is because they objectively have the best caf, despite the (alleged) rats, and because there are a lot of music students who live there, and music students are unquestionably the hottest McGill students.\nView this post on Instagram last year we used to see so many couples in the caf and on the surface we cracked jokes but honestly deep down i think we were jealous. mystery meat has been proven to be a strong aphrodisiac especially when eaten while getting toed underneath the table A post shared by News Out The RVC Caf (@rvc_caf_updates) on Sep 16, 2018 at 4:36pm PDT\n3. Grey Nuns, Concordia\nI cannot put this rez any higher on the ranking because it's definitely haunted. Like, students hear wails in the night, and not the sexy kind, haunted. However, the huge rez is home to some pretty cool people, and it's in an unbeatable location.\nView this post on Instagram fools A post shared by sweaty csu memes (@saucey_csu_memes) on May 29, 2018 at 5:48pm PDT\nREAD ALSO: The 20 Best Student Jobs You Can Get In Montreal\n2. Upper Rez, McGill\nUpper Rez is high up on this list because of the sense of camaraderie that develops when you have to climb up a treacherous, icy hill every day just to get home from class. The single rooms are pretty cute, but the caf suuuucks. Most students stop at RVC or New Rez on their way back from classes to eat.\nView this post on Instagram cheers to my last mcgill meal, also, i created this while at the border crossing to the united states of america, and the border crossing man said “whatcha doin on your phone there ma’am?” and i replied “uh haha..., making a meme?” he gave me the MOST judgmental look A post shared by News Out The RVC Caf (@rvc_caf_updates) on Apr 25, 2018 at 4:15pm PDT\n1. New Rez, McGill\nNew Rez is arguably one of the nicest rezes: it is newly renovated, has a pretty solid caf and a Première Moisson attached to it. Not to mention the fact that you can access an underground mall via an elevator, so you can get toilet paper, tequila and some groceries without even going outside. For some reason, it's also the most popular rez with French kids.\nView this post on Instagram if ur anglophone and accidentally make eye contact with a French person ur on thin fucking ice but if you’re quebecois and dare to even breath around them u are fully dead meat ...this page is now #bilingual wyd???? A post shared by News Out The RVC Caf (@rvc_caf_updates) on Nov 26, 2018 at 3:12pm PST\nThat completes the list of McGill and Concordia rezes.\nWhich one do you think is the best?\nI'm curious to know whether my opinion is an unpopular one or not, so tweet us @MTLBlog with your thoughts.
