Montreal Canadiens winger Brendan Gallagher is keeping himself (and everyone else) entertained through his lively TikTok account. His latest exploit: learning French. In a video posted Wednesday, Gallagher shares the all-too-relatable struggle of learning Quebec's official language. In a video dubiously titled "Finally learned French!" he shares Google translations for the words "green," "worm," "towards," and "glass." The problem: in French, these words, "vert," "ver," "vers," and "verre," are homophones, sounding identical despite distinct spellings. The result is a hilarious phrase sure to frustrate English and French-speakers, alike. "Un ver vert vers le verre," the robotic Google Translate voice proclaims in Gallagher's video following his input in English of "a green worm towards the glass." The hockey player proudly repeats the muddled phrase in front of a backdrop displaying the Wikipedia page for the flag of Quebec. "Nailed it!" he exclaims before exiting, having accomplished his goal of mastering the language of Molière.
