A pattern emerges when you're looking for apartments for rent in Montreal: the farther you get from Ville-Marie and the Plateau, the more bang you get for your buck.

These days, if you're in the market for a new places to live with multiple rooms and decent living space, you're better off starting your search in some of the more outer boroughs.

Here are just some examples of good-size apartments with rent under $1,000 month.

Description: Located in one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world, this apartment is a rare find.

Just a block from the trendy rue Wellington and a riverside park, and three blocks from the De l'Église green metro line station, it offers a high quality of life and lots of space for a more reasonable price than you'll find in other boroughs.

Description: This great apartment is near the Côte-des-Neiges blue metro line station and the bustling chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, as well as the campus of the Université de Montréal.

Description: Nun's Island offers a distinct lifestyle in Montreal. Dotted by condo developments, it's quiet and removed from the electric and eclectic commercial streets on the big island.

But if you're looking for a change of pace, this could be the place for you. The island also has some great parks and biking trails.

That's not to say it lacks transit, though. The listing for this apartment indicates there's a bus stop right outside the door.

Nun's Island is also getting a REM stop for rapid, direct access to downtown Montreal.

Description: This Lachine apartment is right across the street from the large Parc LaSalle and minutes from the borough's picturesque and lively waterfront.

Yes, Lachine is a bit far from downtown. But the listing indicates that several bus routes are nearby.
