India Pale Ale (or IPA, as it is more commonly known) is more popular than ever in the North American beer scene. Even Quebec's own Boreale brewery caught on and began selling their bottled IPA last year. Using the traditional English IPA method, these brews are popular for a reason, but if your looking for a refreshing twist on the IPA brewing method, check out Helm Brewery's 'Hutchison' extra IPA.

Located on Bernard, just east of Parc, Helm embodies the craft brewing method. The bar itself is spacious and comfortable, but the real beer magic happens in the back, where all of Helm's beers are brewed in-house. Helm's beer tanks and brewing style is nothing fancy, but it sure is effective. With eleven different house-brewed beers on tap, ranging from dark stouts to blondes, anyone can find an original Helm beer to fit their taste.

Helm's 'Hutchison' IPA first made its mark at this year's Montreal Beer Festival. After tons of positive reviews, with locals and tourists craving for more, Helm got the point and decided to integrate the Hutchison into its standard lineup.

Unlike most IPAs, the Hutchison is brewed in the American west coast style, using a blend of American hops and san diego ale yeast. The result is a full bodied and well balanced brew that offers a blend of flavors. Strong citrus and floral tastes hit your tongue at first, then mellow out into a light herbal flavor that goes down very smooth. The Hutchison also has a fragrant aroma earthy aroma achieved by adding dry hops when the fermentation process is completed, which adds fragrance without adding any unwanted bitterness. Pale with an orange hue, the Hutchison boasts an impressive 7.5% alcohol content. With how smooth this beer goes down, you would never guess such a high percentage of alcohol. Dangerous, but in a great way.

For those looking to pair the beer with a meal, the head chef of Helm recommends two dishes. One is their pulled pork grilled cheese, and the other a baked brie with homemade salsa. No doubt the fruity flavors of the Hutchison will be deliciously balanced by the creamy cheese used in both dishes.

An American-style IPA, the 'Hutchison' at Helm is a must have for those who have grown tired of the standard IPA, or for beer lovers looking for something a bit different. With tons of variety on their beer menu, Helm can definitely help out the thirsty who are looking for great craft beer in Montreal. Oh, and this is written on the door to Helm's brewing room, so you know they love beer as much as we do.
