Despite the end of the holidays, winter activities are just starting to ramp up in Montreal. Many of the city's most popular skating rinks, for example, are only now opening for the season. The rink adjacent to Beaver Lake on Mount Royal opened on December 1, but its wintertime schedule really only picks up at the beginning of January, when every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the space is host to theme nights!
"Lace up your skates and glide to a special soundtrack on the refrigerated skating rink next Beaver Lake," encourages the website of Les Amis de la Montagne, the non-profit dedicated to preserving the park.
On Thursdays, skaters can dance to the "greatest hits of the 70s and 80s" and, on Saturdays, continue the party with popular songs from the 90s and 00s.
Fridays are reserved for "World Music" while, on Sundays, the rink becomes a classic winter wonderland as the sounds of waltzes and operas fill the crisp air.
Each evening is free to attend and visitors are welcome to bring their own skates.
Otherwise, skates are $10 for two hours before 6 p.m. and $8 for two hours after 6 p.m., when the rink, decorated in lights and exposed to the night sky, is probably at its most magical anyway.
Right now, the City of Montreal notes that skating conditions at the rink next to Beaver Lake are "excellent" but always be sure to check winter site conditions on the Les Amis de la Montagne website before hiking up the mountain.
The conditions of other municipal rinks are listed on the city website. But it's always safe to give your local rink a call first.
Skating is just one of the winter activities offered to the public in Mount Royal Park.
Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also popular.
And though the Mount Royal tubing lanes are maybe the most anticipated winter site of all, conditions are still too poor for them to open to the public, despite initial projections of a December 16 opening.
