Alpacas are taking over the Place Royale in the Montreal Old Port this week as part of the Pointe-à-Callière's celebration of Incan and Peruvian culture. "The area surrounding" the museum "in Old Montréal took on a Peruvian ambiance this weekend, just in time for Spring Break and to highlight the presentation of the exhibition The Incas, Treasures of Peru," states a press release. A Pointe-à-Callière spokesperson tells MTL Blog that visitors can even get up close and personal with the animals.

The alpacas come from La vie en alpaga, a family farm in Beloeil, Quebec with a mission, according to its Facebook page, to educate visitors on the "animal and its fibre, whose qualities deserve to be known."

The free outdoor event includes workshops where alpaca enthusiasts can learn more about the creatures, the "various aspects of shearing and spinning their wool," and its uses in textiles and art.

A small fire and Adirondack chairs ensure onlookers can stay warm and cozy amid all the alpaca excitement.

"And," the museum website further explains, "if you’re feeling a little peckish, come satisfy your sweet tooth at the food truck.

"Perhaps you’ll even run into one of our storytellers nearby…"

Inside the museum, visitors can explore the entire exhibit with the purchase of an admission ticket.

"From prehistory to the contemporary era, the Museum invites the public to explore the captivating world of ancient cultures of Peru through the Inca civilization, who were at once the heirs and bequeathers of some of the most fertile customs and exquisite craftsmanship in the world."

"The exhibition will let you discover the rites and many skills in agriculture, ceramics, metallurgy, sculpture and weaving of different pre-Inca civilizations that all had a major influence on Inca culture."

"Then, at the heart of the exhibition, discover the splendour of the Incas, their social organization, and their incredible artistic achievements."

More information on The Incas, Treasures of Peru is available on the Pointe-à-Callière website.
