This is the final weekend of operation for the Montreal Old Port Skating Rink. Skating rinks across the city are closing one by one and milder weather arrives. Visit MTLBlog for more headlines. As spring temperatures come our way, winter activities unfortunately come to an end. Wet and mild weather has already forced the popular free ice rink at Parc La Fontaine to close up early, according to a post to the organizing company's Facebook page. This weekend, we say goodbye to yet another: the Montreal Old Port Skating Rink. The rink at the Bonsecours Basin behind the Grande Rouse de Montréal commands sweeping views of the downtown skyline and hosts several themed evenings throughout the season, including a few fireworks shows and karaoke on ice. The last day of operation for the Natrel rink is March 8, 2020, an employee for the Old Port of Montreal Corporation, the organization responsible for event planning in the area, confirmed to MTL Blog. But the season is going out with a bang. On Thursday, March 5, the final DJ sur glace event will take place, featuring local artist ASMA, who will be "serving up sounds to get you spinning and dancing on the ice under starry skies and city lights!" says the Facebook event. MTL Blog's own Katina Goulakos tried out the rink when it first opened. She noted that, though the crowds at the rink made the scene more exciting, visitors should expect long wait times on busy evenings. Currently, the Old Port website labels ice conditions as "fair." But given the sudden closure of other rinks and incoming mild temperatures this weekend, it's probably best to call ahead to make sure it's open before trekking through Old Montreal. Indeed, public skating rinks across the city are closing off one by one. Those still open have "poor" ice conditions, according to the City of Montreal website.
