The Last of Us is a PS3 exclusive, post apocalyptic videogame, taking place 20 years from today, when a bacterial fungus that turns people into mindless zombies has devastated The Americas (possibly even the world).

The story follows two characters, Joel, a 50-something Texan badass with a heart of gold, and Ellie, the feistiest 14 year-old whose constant use of “motherfucker” is simply adorable. For reasons the game lays out, Joel and Ellie need to make their way from Boston to Philadelphia. These characters have been through and go through some seriously fucked up shit. This is conveyed through conversations between the characters, but more importantly by the absolutely fantastic facial animations and motion capture tech that developer Naughty Dog is know recognized for.

The zombies are unlike anything I’ve experienced in a zombie game. While the first stage of infection presents your typical zombie, the second stage gives way to what’s called a “Clicker”, where the host’s entire head is covered in what looks like barnacles. The Clickers use sonar to find their prey (aka you), so the tiniest sound can set them off. You also have to deal with other survivors. And let me tell you, there are some people that are bigger and darker monsters in this game than any zombie you'll face.

Another thing about The Last of Us is that the player is almost constantly on the brink of life and ammo. Ammo is scarce, and you will quickly become familiar with the killing aptitudes of bricks and glass bottles (which have been generously sprinkled all over the game). Another interesting game mechanic is the fact that everything you do from switching weapons to healing yourself is done in real time. The game doesn’t pause for you to come up with a strategy. This makes for a quick-paced and more threatening gameplay experience.

The graphics are good, but nothing to write home about. However, this is compensated for by the fact that there are no loading screens. Let me repeat that, other than the first initial load of the game, THERE ARE NO LOAD SCREENS.

The environments and level design are jaw-dropping. One minute you’re inching your way on a window-washer’s platform hanging on a skyscraper in Boston. The next you’re searching a town of abandoned houses in Philly for scarce supplies. The soundtrack is minimal, yet haunting when it’s present.

This game exposes humanity for what it is: raw, violent, but sometimes beautiful. The decisions characters make in this story will seem imperfect at times, but so is human nature. Sorry not sorry for the emotional roller coaster you’re about to undergo. #youwillcry
