It is about a 2 hour flight from Fortaleza and about 4 hours by van from Santo Amaro, the closest entrance to the national park. When researching the city, most of the blogs I read said that it was unnecessary to even stop in this dilapidated, crime ridden, ugly city. With that being said and not knowing anyone who had traveled here, I only booked one night. What a big mistake! If you are an architecture lover and particularly Portuguese architecture, this place is phenomenal. It immediately reminded me of Havana Cuba without the classic cars. The people are brown and beautiful, the city is the reggae capital of not only Brazil, but all of South America and even has a reggae museum that I didn't have time to visit. Reggae music can be heard playing throughout the streets all day and most of the night. I will definitely plan to revisit this part of the world sooner than later. #wander_n_solo #brazil #maranhao #saoluis #architecture #architecturelover #reggae #reggaecapital #roadto100countries #travelwomen #instatravel #livingmybestlife #mybesttravel #solotraveler #womantraveler #worldtraveler #blacktravel #over50 #flashpacker #tarheels A post shared by Irma Clement 🇺🇸📌 next 🇧🇷 (@wander_n_solo) on Jul 22, 2019 at 5:25am PDT\nBrazil\n"Exercise a high degree of caution in Brazil due to high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence in urban areas."\nThe Public Health Agency of Canada also advised travelers to use special health precautions for the Zika Virus.
