English Man Wins French World Scrabble Championship

Winning a French Scrabble World Championship is quite the achievement on its own, but winning it when you don't speak a single word of French is simply unbelievable. That's exactly what Nigel Richards did on Monday July 20th 2015. The Championship was held in Belgium and Richards defeated his opponent even though he had only started studying French words 8 weeks before the championship.
To be clear, he didn't learn French. He cannot understand the language or carry a conversation, but that didn't stop him from memorizing the words in the dictionary. Richards is unsurprisingly an English scrabble champion as well. In fact, he's won 5 national titles, 3 world titles and 11 king's cup titles.

Still, even with his reputation, no one expected Richards would actually win the championship. Once contestant in disbelief was even quoted saying: "Are you extra-terrestrial or something?"
