As we reach peak winter conditions, filming work for the Disney+ Home Alone reboot is ramping up in Montreal. The team behind the production is clearly taking advantage of the city's snowy landscape for its Christmastime scenes. Though like the original 1990 movie, the reboot will take place in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka, Illinois, it's the Montreal area that will actually appear on screen.
Filming has already taken place on the South Shore in Longueuil and Hudson, but now it appears the production has finally moved to Montreal Island, setting up shop outside a home in Beaconsfield.
Over the weekend, the talented Ellie Kemper, perhaps the biggest name in the reboot cast list, took to Instagram to post a photo of herself with her makeup artist, captioned it "We’re not cold YOU’RE COLD (also we are freezing)."
She also added a little #canada but sadly no direct love for Montreal.
Local resident Ryan Clarke confirmed to MTL Blog that the residential home in the background decked out in holiday decorations was, in fact, in the on-island suburb.
"There were Christmas lights all over the houses as well as street lights," he said. There were "tons of people walking around" — presumably members of the cast and crew.
"They had three or four huge cranes about twice the size of the houses for lighting," which was so strong that he could see it from his backyard blocks away.
Clarke alleges that residents of the street were paid to stay in a hotel and that other nearby homes are apparently used for meetings and breaks.
We do not know the exact role of this charming Beaconsfield home or whether it will take the symbolic place of the McCallister mansion in the 1990 blockbuster.
The reboot also stars Rob Delaney and Archie Yates of Jojo Rabbit fame.
It's unclear where the production is headed next. Part of Vieux Longueuil transformed into an American Christmas market for filming last week.
Keep your eyes out for similar transformations, but always be sure to keep your distance respect the work of the cast and crew.
