Environment Canada Issues Tornado Warning For Quebec

Much of southern Ontario and Quebec are experiencing severe weather today.

Environment Canada yesterday issued severe weather alerts for parts of the Saint Lawrence River Valley which include a strong wind and rainfall warning for Montreal.

The Weather Network also suggested that conditions would favour the formation of tornadoes.

Canada is largely unaccustomed to such violent phenomena. But occassional severe, dangerous storms do touch down at the end of summer and beginning of autumn, perhaps the single most dangerous weather period in the North American calender.

Now, Environment Canada, the government meteorological agency, has issued an official "tornado warning" for the Gatineau area of Quebec.

According to the warning, isolated tornadoes could form in the area this afternoon and early evening.

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation," the alert continues.

In the case of a tornado, Environment Canada advises citizens to take these precautions:

– Go indoors to a room on the lowest floor
– Stay away from outside walls and windows
– Leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary shelters
– As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.

Stay tuned for updates. It is crucial that people in the affected areas remain alert.
