Canada Is Ranked #3 Best Country In The World For Women
Who run the world? Girls!
Today is March 8th, and women from all around the world are celebrating International Women's Day! Officially established in 1909, this special day represents the social, economic, cultural and political achievements made by women from all around the world.
Although we all have numerous reasons to honour the many women in our lives, not many people know what IWD actually is. Originally called International Working Women's Day, March 8th has come to represent the celebration and appreciation of women and our progress. We've come a long way since the days when we couldn't vote, didn't have equal rights, nor anything close to an equal income, and while we haven't quite resolved all of these issues, Canada is helping to lead the way.
As you maybe already know, Canada is ranked #3 in the world for best human rights, and now we can also claim the title of #3 Best Country for Women! At least according to the more than 7,000 women who filled out surveys for US News' 2016 Best Countries rankings. Admittedly, the "experience of being a women in Canada is far from uniform," but our government has made protecting women's rights in terms of gender equality, income equality, safety, and progressiveness, integral to both domestic and foreign policy.
Looking back through history, we have even more to be proud of, as there are many Montreal women who have done amazing things, paving the way for our freedoms.
Montreal women continue to break barriers, setting a great example for the rest of us. If you want to learn more about powerful achievements, news, daily updated infographics, and local events happening that are made BY women FOR women, the newly-launched Women's History Project is a Montreal-made website dedicated to the story of women from around the world.
As feminist and social activist, Gloria Steinem once said, "The story of women's struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization, but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights." So let's raise awareness, and bring together more powerful, independent and strong women to make this world a better and equal place for all of us.
