Have you ever wanted to learn how to dance? Maybe you've thought about taking salsa lessons or you've toyed with the idea of brushing up on your ballroom dancing skills — but you've just never actually started.
If you're in Montreal, wanting an excuse to get out of the house and meet new people, there's one style of dance you should absolutely be learning: the West Coast Swing. Not only does this super adaptable dance allow you to groove to almost any genre of music, including pop, R&B, soul/funk, and blues, but it's gender neutral too (that's right — anyone can lead or follow!).
This partnered modern swing dance is completely versatile and can be used almost anywhere. It's performed to a wide variety of music, plus its simple basics and emphasis on improvisational movement make it a blast to enjoy socially, but unique enough to never run out of new things to learn. Most of all, it's a lot of fun!
Montreal currently has two schools that offer classes: Studio Swing Connexion and Studio 88 Swing. Westie Montréal, a non-profit that's dedicated to managing the organization of West Coast Swing parties and events, has a full schedule of available classes on its Facebook page.
Currently, West Coast Swing enthusiasts can participate in Westie Evenings Tuesday, Westie Evenings Thursday, Westie Swing Party Saturday (free trial classes at 8:30 PM on Nov. 2 and Dec. 14), and Jazzhot Nights Saturday (free intro classes at 8 PM on Oct. 26 and Nov. 23).
We all know that learning to dance can be intimidating, but what's great about the West Coast Swing community is that its laid-back, inclusive, and passionate teachers will help you every step of the way. You'll feel welcome the minute you step into any Studio Swing Connexion or Studio 88 Swing classes.
Best of all, once you've completed your first lesson, you'll be armed with basic, but impressive, moves that can be applied to pretty much any type of music. You name it, you can dance the West Coast Swing to it!
