Dawson College Has A Program For Creative Entrepreneurs

Calling all creatives in Montreal!

Everybody knows there’s not exactly a surplus of jobs in the creative sector. If you work in the creative industries (or hope to one day), you’ve probably dreamed about making it big as your own boss, but if you’re anything like me, you have absolutely NO idea how to get there.

That’s no longer a problem thanks to a new program offered by Dawson College at the iC MTL business incubator. It is specially designed for creative Montrealers in need of the entrepreneurial know-how to get their ideas off the ground. Now taking on their second round of cohorts, the Venture Creation for the Creative and Cultural Industries program can give you the support and resources you need to take you from pipe dreams and lightbulb moments to actual, real-life success.

This isn't your standard start-your-own-business course - with the help of a whole bunch of teachers, advisors, mentors, guest speakers and industry experts, Dawson College wants to fill the gap between creativity and practical entrepreneurial skills, helping you to make a fully-fledged career from your talents. Artists, designers, makers - whatever creative calling you answer to, Dawson College can get you to where you want to be.

This is the only combined accredited program and business incubation service in Canada for creative entrepreneurship, helping you with the launch of your business all the while offering you opportunities to collaborate, network and connect with like-minded locals. It can be pretty difficult to get access to that kind of support when you want to found a creative start-up, so having all those resources under one program is a huge help - and their students agree.

"There’s lots of work to do outside the classroom – just not the kind that keeps you in the library all night,” says Stephanie Coco-Palermo, student and founder of Vagabondheels, a lifestyle blog. “Instead, our homework consists of interviewing prospective clients, booking business meetings and attending networking events – including invitation-only events at the incubator with Montreal’s top creative entrepreneurs…. If you’re done with 9-5 grind and want to spread your creative wings – this is the program you’ve been waiting for.”

After just eight months, you’ll walk away with an Attestation of College Studies and a thorough education into how to run a creative business, ready to bring your ideas out into the world. And it gets better - for Quebec residents, this program is absolutely 100% tuition-free!

If you want to start your own photography business, online art gallery, augmented reality theatre company or other creative endeavour combining art and design with technology, you’re going to need business skills that are relevant to your vision. Reserve your spot at Dawson College's open info sessions for more information, held at 6pm at 4001 De Maisonneuve, Dawson College on April 5th and April 26.
