Mythical creatures and entire village scenes line the streets of Saint-Côme.
Festival St-Côme Illuminated Ice Sculptures Are Like Stepping Into "Frozen"

Despite the generally unpleasant, deep cold that winter brings, the season is also a time of whimsy and magic. The Festival St-Côme en Glace is one occasion set to bring a little light and fun to the dreary, dark days of late winter. The event, which will begin in February 2020, provides a good reason to venture out and brave the brutal conditions.

Located in Saint-Côme, Quebec, a 90-minute drive from downtown, the festival offers the opportunity to enjoy shows, hot-dog dinners, winter sports, snow discos, workshops, ice sculptures, and outdoor games.

On weekend days, the festival website explains, visitors can go sledding and enjoy traditional music along the main street.

There won't be a dull moment during its two-week run from February 1 to 16.

Despite the wide array of fun activities, the impressive ice sculptures are undoubtedly the most captivating attraction, especially at nightfall when they shine with a thousand colourful lights.

Visitors will even have the chance to create their own work of frozen art with a block of ice and chisels provided for free on-site.

Photos from years past show the scale of the sculptures and the creativity of the participating artists, who are able to capture in ice everything from the round, cuteness of a teddy bear to the delicate wings of an angel.

Mythical creatures and entire village scenes await along the main boulevard. Many of the sculptures evoke scenes from Frozen.

"For almost 40 years," says the event Facebook page, the "outdoor festival that has been making us appreciate the cold winter weather."

Mark your calendars. The festival Saint-Côme may just provide that boost you need to get you through the last few weeks of winter.
