Suspect is still on the loose.
Firebomb Explodes At Montreal's Bell Media Center

It is a beautiful morning in Montreal. But with the festival season in full swing, security is high in the areas of the city that are more dense with pedestrians than ever. High density also means high levels of crime.

Montreal is one of the safest major cities in the world. But the city still has its share of major, violent crimes.

Early this morning someone threw a firebomb at the main entrance of the Bell Media center at the corner of Rue Papineau and Blvd. René-Lévesque.

Luckily, no one was hurt and police were able to easily extinguish the resulting fire. There was minimal damage to the door and façade of the building.

There's no word yet about suspects or motives, or if the crime was timed to coincide with on of the busiest weeks in Montreal.

The city is on high alert this time of year. Squads of police officers are roaming the streets and security checkpoints mark the entrances to street festivals downtown and in the Plateau-Mont-Royal.

While the high security is necessary to keep festival spaces and visitors safe, the situation also has an adverse effect on the safety of many residents, particularly people of colour.

Stay tuned for more news from the festival weekend.
