From the genius who showed us how to make your own Montreal style bagels comes an idea we wish we had thought of first. It's so simple and it looks magically delicious, yet hardly anyone has ever thought of making french toast with bagels instead of bread.

Food blogger Sami Berger, creator of MySecondBreakfast who sells homemade Montreal style bagels in Calgary had a bunch of stale leftover bagel samples and instead of letting them go to waste, she decided to throw those bad boys in a simple mix of eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and orange zest, and fried them up in butter.

Here's what you'll need to make your own French Toast Bagel Bites:

  •  3 bagels (about 3 cups) cut into chunks
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons orange zest
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • maple syrup

Cut your bagels up into 1 inch chunks. (do not cut them length wise or they'll be too thin and they'll end up being dry on the inside). Whisk up milk, egg, cinnamon, vanilla extract, orange zest and salt. Soak those bagel chunks in milk mixture for ten minutes. Fry the bagel bites in butter until golden brown on each side.
