FREE Uber Rides In Montreal Today

Montreal's taxi drivers have made it no secret how much they hate Uber, and after today I have a feeling they're going to hate them even more.
While the taxi drivers are busy today protesting Uber being made a legitimate, legal service, Uber is offering two trips, up to $15 each, to all new subscribers who ride UberX and UberXL for the first time. That is possibly one of the most brilliant things that I've ever heard. They're also going to put a cap on all surge pricing and forgo the 20% service fee that they normally charge the drivers, so that more drivers will offer rides today.
1,000 taxi drivers are expected to assemble at Montreal's Technoparc starting at 10:30am for today's protest, so we also have that to look forward to... The thing that I don't understand is how the taxi drivers don't see that they're shooting themselves in the foot here. Rather than, I don't know, maybe offering better service or trying to engage in talks with the government about lowering the taxi licence fee, they're complaining about another company that's doing their job better. Hopefully they'll soon come to terms with the fact that they're becoming an outdated service and get with the 21st century.
