Meghan Markle Could Become The Next Queen Of Canada

Imagine her face on all our money!
Meghan Markle Could Become The Next Queen Of Canada

The face of Queen Elizabeth the II is one of the most recognizable in all of Canada, well, because she's everywhere.

TL;DR There is nothing in the Canadian constitution that could prevent the government from changing the laws of succession to allow a different monarch to take the throne. In other words, despite the fact that Meghan Markle is unlikely to ever take the throne in Britain, according to the Canadian constitution, while unlikely, she could be appointed by Canada as the new figurehead at any time.

Although Canada has been a sovereign nation since 1982, the Queen has reigned as Canada's head of state or "figurehead" since 6 February 1952.

Now, I don't want to bore you with a snooze fest of a history lesson, so let's get to the good part: the straight-up facts.

So – who is the next monarch of Canada? And more importantly, can Meghan Markle ever take that place?

The first in line to the throne after Elizabeth II is her son, Prince Charles of Whales.

Next is Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and, most importantly, husband of the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton. Next in the line of succession are their children George, Charlotte, and baby Louis.

William's brother, Prince Harry, husband of Meghan Markle, is sixth in line to the throne.

All that to say, the likelihood of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ever getting to the throne are slim to none, even laughable.

But wait!

If you look closely at the Canadian constitution, things start to get exciting.

According to Philippe Lagassé, associate professor at Carlton University, an independent Canadian monarchy headed by a King Harry and Queen Meghan just might be possible.

In a post on his website, Prof. Lagassé pointed out that there is nothing in the Canadian constitution that would prevent the government from changing the laws of succession to allow a different monarch to take the throne.

The actual legal means by which this change could happen, according to the professor, is a pretty clever way of evading royal assent.

There is little to no chance this could actually manifest. But considering that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently the "hot" Royal couple, it's fun to fantasize about Canada totally overlooking the laws of succession and appointing Harry and Meghan as King and Queen. Afterall, it's legal.

I mean, the Royal Canadian mint already made a commemorative coin with her face on it. This could be just the beginning...
