How To File Your Taxes For Free In Canada

Here's how Canadians just like you can take advantage of free software and resources to easily and securely file your taxes! April 30th is just a couple of weeks away, after all...

Because we're in the midst of tax season here in Canad, people all over the country are scrambling to get their taxes filed on time. While many people will choose to go with an accountant or tax specialist, the costs of those services are often prohibitive for students and lower-income individuals.

Don't you wish there was a free way to file your taxes in Canada? Luckily for you, there are plenty of alternative free options out there so that you don't have to worry about the high cost of private tax services!

TL;DR Ever wondered if there's a free way to file your taxes in Canada? Look no further, your prayers have been answered! Take advantage of these free tax filing services before the April 30th tax crunch.

Simple Tax

Simple Tax is an online pay-what-you-can tax filing service that is easy and straight-forward to use. Simple Tax makes filing your taxes, well, simple. It's a PWYC service, so if you can't, don't worry! If you have no idea what anything means, you can activate the auto-fill feature that's easily accessed on the site.

TurboTax Free

You definitely know this one. TurboTax Free is a wonderful resource and probably the most frequently used one on this list. You can easily file your returns from your phone, desktop, or laptop. The free software allows you to use the CRA approved auto-fill feature as well if you need a helping hand.

H&R Block Free

Did you know that you don't have to go to an H&R Block location to file your tax return? People that do that are shocked at how expensive it can be. Seems like H&R Block listened to our concerns because they now have free online tax software! There are no restrictions and you can easily file your return on one simple interface.

Free Tax Clinics

If a tax software isn't your thing, or you're like me and sometimes very computer illiterate, Canada offers free tax clinics across the country. These tax clinics are staffed by volunteer tax experts and will walk you through the process.

Booking your appointment is easy! But, if you're on-the-go, you can drop off your files and someone will look them over for you. Free tax clinics are only available to low-income individuals and families.

StudioTax has been around since 2004 and offers awesome and easy-to-use tax return software for free. However, it's only available in English so Quebec residents will have to look elsewhere, as they've not yet managed to offer their services in both national languages.

GenuTax is a completely free tax service that handles all the ins and outs of complicated tax returns with ease. Quebec residents cannot use this software, unfortunately, for the same reasons mentioned above, with StudioTax. Also, the software only runs on Windows...

AdvTax is a good resource to use if you're pressed for time because filing a return with this free software takes around 10 minutes. The software is offered in English, French, Mandarin, and Cantonese. Quebeckers won't be able to use the software, though.

We sincerely hope one of these software programs manages to help you out this tax season. It can be so unnecessarily stressful, especially if you're tackling the job for the first time.

It's important to remember that, while filing your taxes can feel like giving money away to the government, it's also your last chance to make sure you aren't paying taxes unnecessarily... and remember, you've always got those returns to look forward to!
