Justin Trudeau Wants Canadian Men To Do This For Women

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is calling on all men to take action to end violence against women and girls and promote gender-based equality.

During a statementmade on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Trudeau stated that violence against women “is a violation of human rights.”

Trudeau said that any act of violence towards an individual who self-identifies as female harms the entire community.

“All of us share a responsibility to make sure women and girls have the respect, protection, and freedom that is their right” said Trudeau.

The Prime Minister pointed out that gender-based violence disproportionately affects women from diverse populations, such as trans women, women of colour, Indigenous women, refugees, and low-income earners.

To solve the ongoing issue of gender-based violence, Trudeau said men need to do more.

“From speaking up about the rights of women and girls, to promoting women’s leadership in every aspect of our society, to standing against violence whenever it occurs, men have a vital role to play in eliminating gender-based violence.”

Trudeau also announceda government strategy to curb violence towards women and girls. Titled “It’s Time: Canada’s Strategy to Prevent and Address Gender-Based Violence,” the initiative will provide more services for women of various communities and engage men of all ages in awareness campaigns.

As part of the strategy a Gender-Based Violence Knowledge Centre will be created, under the Status of Women Canada government agency.
