Warning: Measles Outbreak In Montreal Area, Hundreds Of People Potentially Exposed

Shopping just got a lot more dangerous for some folks.

Montreal health authorities have expanded their list of Laval areas where people may have been exposed to the measlesvirus.

This comes just a day after the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services confirmedthe second case of measles in the Laval area.

The first person confirmed with measles may have inadvertently exposed other shoppers to the virus while they were at the Carrefour Laval shopping centre on Wednesday, June 26th.

The latest person confirmed used public transit, a Dollarama, a popular restaurant, and a pharmacy all in the Laval area between June 26th and June 29th.

Both cases are thought to be contagious during these times. If you want to see the full expanded list of locations, check out the Ministry’s website here.

Measles can be spread by a simple cough or sneeze.

And while there’s no need to panic, if you think you were exposed, keep an eye out for some of the following:

• Fever

• Dry cough

• Runny nose

• Sore throat

• Inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis)

• Tiny white spots with bluish-white centres on a red background found inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek — also called Koplik's spots

• A skin rash made up of large, flat blotches that often flow into one another

Measles symptoms can take up to a week to show. So if you or someone you know were in these locations, contact Info-Santé 811.

Anyone with a weakened immune system or otherwise not vaccinated can receive an antibody injection that will inoculate you temporarily.

But of course, the best way to make sure you don’t get measles is to be vaccinated.
