Bust out the bagpipes, grab a hammer to toss, and get your beer cups ready for the 37th edition of Montreal's Highland Games. Taking place in Parc Arthur Therrien (map) this Sunday, the event will be a celebration of all things Scottish, with everyone invited to partake.
Numerous athletic events will be going on for you to watch, all of which you probably haven't seen elsewhere before. Esoteric/Scottish athletic events to be held include Putting the Stone (shot put, but with a rock), Sheaf (hay) Toss, Hammer Toss, and weight tosses, so expect to see some serious feats of strength.
Music and dancing are also major features of the festival, with Scottish Piping competitions to be held, along with Highland Dancing performances. A 300 person bagpipe performance will also open and close the Highland Games, which will surely be quite the audio-visual spectacle.
Rounding out the list of activities is a serious beer tent, which opens promptly at 11am and serves drank 'til 8:30pm. Judging by this video taken at the 2009 Highland Games, the beer tent will be a hub of activity with more to do than just drink.
