If you have no crazy vacations planned, taking a little road trip is a great alternative. Think about it, 5hrs is not a long drive and visiting small towns in natural settings is a perfect way to relax and escape all the stress of city life. So what are you waiting for? Go pack your bags!
1. Alma, QC (5h)
Located in the Saguenay Lac St-Jean region of Quebec, right on the shores the river, you're sure to have a calm worry-free stay. Part of the suggested activities, is the H2O rafting & canyonnig. This series of tours takes you through the natural marvels of one of our province's biggest bodies of water.
2. Salmon Lake, NY (3h 30min)
This destination is the perfect place to rent a cottage with a few friends and relax by the lake. Salmon Lake is known for its salmon fishing (duh). The fish are so big, there's no need for worrying about where to go for dinner.
3. Portland, ME (5h)
Portland is one of those classic Atlantic shore towns, and it won't be as packed with tourists as Old Orchard. It's a decently big city so you can still find great bars and spots to party with the local college kids. Their old port area is beautiful and full of nice little restaurants. The best part of visiting Maine is the LOBSTER!!!
4. Smith Falls, ON (2h 45min)
This small house in the middle of the lake is only one of the many cottages up for rent in the Smith Falls region. This getaway is the perfect place to forget the world, just relax, go swimming and canoeing all day long. Fun fact about this small town: there is a giant Hershey factory now turned medical marijuana grow-op.
5. Albany, NY (3h 30min)
Albany is actually the capital of New York State, therefore this old city is full of history and filled with things to visit. You can take a historic boat tour of the city. Check out City Beer Hall, this bar is located in a great colonial building; They serve good food, amazing local beer and have a mechanical bull. Also stop by their Premium Outlets with all kinds of big brand name stores.
6. Burlington, VT (1h 30min)
Burlington is a common shopping destination for Montrealers because Vermont state does not tax clothing, so their prices are great. Whether you've been or not, check out the Made Inn Bed & Breakfast (see picture above). What's interesting about this small town is that even though the population is not large, it is quite a trendy little city, with all kinds of organic restaurants and micro-breweries to try.

7. Ausable Chasm NY (1h 30min)
This natural landmark is fed by Rainbow Falls, runs 2 miles long and is located near Keeseville NY. This is an awesome vacation for people who enjoy the outdoors; Available activities include: mountain climbing over the chasm, rafting, tubing, lantern tours of the caves, mountain biking and zip line tours, all offered at the Ausable Chasm Campground.
8. North Hampton NH (4h 30min)
This is a small beach town, the perfect place to relax, lay out, and stuff you face with seafood and New England Clam Chowder. Apparently the waves are big enough here to go surfing! there's all kinds of beach front restaurants, breweries and ranches to see. The trick to a stress-free vacation is to plan all your activities before you get there, so you're not stuck worrying about what to do when you arrive.
