Back in the day, Montreal parking wasn't too horrible.
Sure there were just as many parking meters, but most of the time when you found one, it still had that little flashing light indicating you had 15 minutes of free parking left. It was like receiving a gift from the universe.
And if you wanted to add more time, you could just top off the meter without any problems.
But these days, no matter what, you have to fill the meter. And you can't even top them off anymore, so you actually have to wait for the meter to expire before you can add more money.
There's no denying parking in Montreal is fucked!
Construction is worse than ever, and we lost a ton of spots to BIXI stations, terrasses, movie shoots and festivals.
Then when you finally find a spot, it take you 20 minutes to figure out if it's even legal to park there.
Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about Montreal's parking, but what you can do is familiarize yourself with all the cheap and free parking spots in the city.
Some parking meter zones cost up to $3,00 an hour, and only 2 streets further the cost drops to $1,50.
Luckily there is a website that always informs you where the cheapest spots are as well as some free ones. So whether you need a street spot, a parking meter spot or a private lot, you'll know exactly where the cheapest ones are.
But the best part is that this site updates in real-time, and since parking in Montreal changes depending on the time of day, you'll always have the latest and more accurate information available.
The site is called Parkopedia and it will soon be you new best friend.
You can actually enter the dimensions of you vehicle as well as you departure and arrival point and Parkopedia will tell you where to park and how long it will take to walk from your car to your destination. You can even customize your search for motorcycle parking.
