I don't exactly live the healthiest of lifestyles, but even I try to be careful about what I eat.
Luckily I'm not a big fan of soda, I never eat desserts or sweets, and I take my coffee black; so I avoid a lot of sugar throughout the day.
But it turns out that I still might be eating a lot more sugar than I thought. And so are you.

If you woke up this morning, and had a yogurt with a glass orange juice for breakfast, you just ingested more sugar than you'd find in a can of coke. Plus that was all the sugar you were supposed to ingest all day, and it's only 8:30 am.
But it's not all your fault. This morning, a new report came out that proves how hard it is to keep track of your sugar intake. That's because more than 2/3 of packaged food and beverages in Canada have added sugar.
The study tested more than 40,000 items and found that 66% of packaged food, 86% of snacks, and 79% of all drinks have added sugar.
Part of the problem is how we perceive sugar. Sugar is synonymous with happiness. The famous expression goes: "Sugar and Spice and everything nice". But in reality, it should be: "Sugar and spice and heart disease, strokes, obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol, and cancer"
So it's not surprising that we're eating on average 3 times more sugar than we should be every day. And what makes this even more annoying is how dishonest the labels are.
Many labels don't specify the amount of added sugar, and whenever they can, they use terms like dextrose, barley malt maltodextrin, and ethyl maltol. Actually there are 50 names the labels use to hide sugar.
Health Canada announced there would be changes coming, but that won't be for another 4 years. So until then you'll have to watch your own ass, literally.
