This Monday September 7 is Labour Day in Canada, which means that pretty much all of us are going to get a well-deserved break from, well, labour. As much as I'm looking forward to a day of work-less bliss, I know how annoying it can be to make big plans for your day off only to turn up somewhere and realize that it's closed. So in hopes that this can be prevented from happening to any of you, here is what's open and closed this Labour Day in Montreal.

What's Closed:

  • Banks
  • Malls
  • Canada Post Offices
  • Grocery stores bigger than 375 square meters
  • All stores except bookstores, flower stores and antique shops (which can stay open if they want)
  • Some restaurants (you should call ahead before going)
  • Some arenas, swimming pools and sports centres, depending on neighbourhoods (check before going)
  • City of Montreal offices
  • Municipal court
  • Provincial and Federal offices

What's Open:

  • Some Deps
  • Farmers Markets
  • Biodome
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Insectatarium
  • Science Centre
  • Planetarium
  • Pointe-a-Callière Museum
  • Certain pharmacies (but hours may be reduced)
  • Service-based businesses (eg. restaurants, gas stations, hair salons) if they wish
  • STM Bus and Metro (but on a holiday schedule)
  • AMT trains (but on a Sunday schedule)
  • Parking Meters (boo!)
  • Movie theatres
  • The Casino
  • Garbage pick ups
  • Most SAQs (except for ones in malls)
