While Montreal has enough museums to satisfy any cultural itch, if you want to expand your horizons and check out an array of some of the most evocative artists in the world the Massachusetts Museum Of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) happens to be only a three and a half-hour drive from Montreal.

The museum hosts a stunning collection of indoor and outdoor performing arts venues in a massive 130,000 square feet old industrial complex.

The collections aren't dedicated solely to monumental contemporary art but also focus heavily on immersive experiences where you can interact with the pieces, and dare I say it: grab as many Insta shots as you want.

You have your choice of types of galleries to visit with shows ranging from music, sculpture, dance, film, painting, photography, theatre, and "new, boundary-crossing works of art that defy easy classification." If an artist could dream it up and bring it to life, Mass MoCA most likely has shown it. 

When I say the space is massive, it is nearly dizzyingly confusing. Most of the art shown is constructed in the museum due to their size and intricacy.

There are currently 44 exhibits shown including five outdoor exhibits, some that live within the network of late 19th-century courtyards. 

Famed singer-songwriter Annie Lennox even has a show here that will run through to February 2.

Considered part material diary and part art installation, you can browse her own personal objects accompanied by her own recollections and stories.  

Acclaimed artist James Turrell, who focuses on light and space, has nine installations. His work with light is nearly surreal and have you feeling like you're experiencing another world with what seems like levitating or suspended objects in the air.

There are also virtual reality exhibits that are not to be missed by Laurie Anderson. In her work To The Moon, she creates a virtual reality using images from Greek mythology, literature, science, sci-fi space movies, and politics to create an imaginary and dark new moon.

There is limited space for Anderson's exhibits and two of Turrell's exhibits, but you can reserve your spot up to 30 days in advance to get a glimpse of these otherworldly works.

The drive is more than worth it if you want to check out one of the largest museums of its kind, and considering the inexpensive cost of admission ($12 for students), this is a great way to spend a few winter days indoors.
