Following record heat last week across Montreal and southern Quebec, officials warned of a high fire risk in parts of the province. Forest fires has already spread across dry forests in the east part of the province. Firefighters there even had to issue a call for help to American authorities, who responded by sending hundreds of individuals across the border.

There's no word yet whether the current fire on Montreal's south shore is related to extreme dryness, but right now that appears to be the best explanation.

From Montreal, the massive blaze appears to come from the Champlan Bridge, but may have a source well beyond that.

Montrealers were quick to document the huge cloud of black smoke on twitter:

According tot he Facebook group Spotted Brossard The fire was caused by a BBQ

The consequences of one of the worst natural disasters in Canadian history continue to unfold. Over 50 people have already died in the province because of heat stroke, alone. Hopefully, no one has been hurt in the blaze. But will fires ravaging much of Quebec, it's only a matter of time before they inflict some serious property damage.

What's worse, more extreme heat is coming to Montreal by the end of this week. This is a new phenomenon in a province famous for its brutal winters.

Stay tuned for updates.
