McGill Ranked #44 Best University In The World, Concordia Not Even In The Top 600

The World University Ranking for 2019 is here!
McGill Ranked #44 Best University In The World, Concordia Not Even In The Top 600

And we're back, back, back again with another University ranking, this time it's the big boy, The World University Ranking and it's time to see how the good old schools of higher education in Quebec have fared this time.

McGill is clearly having a good year, making their way into the top 50... Concordia, on the other hand, not doing so hot.

This year, they've managed to rank over 1,250 schools, what they say is their "biggest international league table to date." The competition is fierce and schools are judged on all "core missions" including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

As mentioned above, the World University Ranking looks at Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International outlook, to determine an "Overall" score out of 100 to determine the ranking of thousands of post-secondary schools.

So, on with the rankings!

The Overall Top Ten:

  1. Oxford
  2. Cambridge
  3. Stanford
  4. MIT
  5. Cal Tech
  6. Harvard
  7. Princeton
  8. Yale
  9. Imperial College London
  10. University of Chicago

Who's surprised here? These are your classic institutions, your Ivy Leagues, your MITs. These boys top the list every year and it's never a surprise. Students who walk these hallowed halls should be very damn proud of themselves.

But here in Canada, we've got our own kinda thing going on... the Maple Leage, let's call it.

Yes, you can also sort the ranking by country, to just see those schools that ranked in Canada. Below is the "Canadian Top 10" which filters out schools in other countries. In brackets, you'll see what the school's true ranking is, in terms of the global list.

The Canadian Top Ten:

  1. U of T (#21)
  2. UBC (#37)
  3. McGill (#44)
  4. McMaster (#77)
  5. Université de Montréal (#90)
  6. University of Alberta (#132)
  7. University of Ottawa (#176)
  8. Western (#190)
  9. University of Calgary (#199)
  10. University of Waterloo (#201)

And a shoutout to my alma mater, Dalhousie, for just missing the top 10 but making it in at spot #11 and, most importantly, above SMU. (Kidding. Mostly.)

Now, don't get thinking that McGill only ranking #44 globally or U de M only ranking #90 globally means these schools aren't top tier. Remember, this list is out of over 1,250 schools worldwide... so when you think of that, anything under 100 is amazing.

Yet again, those of us that dwell in Quebec have a lot to be proud of. McGill and U de M both ranked in the top 10 and that is something to celebrate.

Those of you at Concordia...  maybe next year?
