Although Meghan Markle is not the first American woman to join the royal ranks, the last time an American woman entered the royal family it caused a national uproar.

Back in 1936 twice-divorced Wallis Simpson had stolen the heart of King Edward VIII when he inherited the throne. Their relationship prompted such a scandal, that King Edward abdicated his role rather than continue to reign without the woman he loved by his side. Swoon.

Needless to say, it's not the 1930s anymore, but this story still reminds us of how difficult it can be for American women entering the Royal Family. And being American, Meghan Markle must defend her role as the Duchess more than any other British-born woman ever would.

With that said, it seems like her American family is not making her new royal life any easier. First off, both her father and half-sister have been speaking candidly to the press, and refuse to stop until Meghan and her father are on speaking terms again.

Now, it seems that Meghan Markle's half-brother Thomas Markle is making her life a lot harder as his wife - Meghan's future sister-in-law - was just arrested in Grants Pass, Oregon, for charges of assault.

Although the precise nature of the assault and incident are blurry, it seems like what happened should be categorized as "domestic violence."

Thomas Markle, the manager of a fast food chain restaurant, and his wife miss Blount claim that this incident was a wake-up call for their relationship and they will be seeking counseling.

Thomas Markle was also previously married to another woman for 11-years who was known as being a recovering alcoholic.

Although by all reports, Meghan is not particularly close to her estranged American family, these incidents do not help her royal image whatsoever.

It's unfortunate if the press continues to judge Markle based on what her removed family does rather than her efforts as the new Duchess.

With that said, Miss Blount has been released from jail after two nights. Charges are not being pressed.
