Montreal Could Be Getting A Tram System

By now, Montreal residents are used to empty political promises to ameliorate the dire state of the city's transit and road system.

The long-promised extension of the blue line, the STM Pink Line. But a plan has come to light last year and we're still hoping it might have a chance at construction.

The Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ), a provincial centre-right party, unveiled a master plan to address congestion in the city of Montreal, including new highway extensions, rapid bus routes, and a new tram system!

The tram tracks would extend from downtown to Montreal North, to the very northern tip of the island. A separate route would link much of the South Shore to the STM yellow line at Longueuil station.

In the early 20th century, Montreal abandoned its overcrowded trolley system in favour of highway and road investments. The metro system brought rail back to the city in the 1960s.

This new tram system is a cheaper alternative to untenable plans to dig new metro tunnels. Trams also add a certain charm to the neighbourhoods they connect. This street-level light-rail would also alleviate metro congestion downtown.

Of course, this was just another political promise. But opinion polls show that the CAQ is favoured to win a majority in the October provincial elections. If a tram system is really a cheaper alternative, it might gain some track-tion.
