Montreal Has Its Very Own Special Species Of Melon

The Montreal melon is a very real thing.
Montreal Has Its Very Own Special Species Of Melon

Montreal apparently has its own kind of melon. You may’ve looked forward to eating delicious melons this summer, and now you can eat and show some city-pride with a Montreal-specific variety of melon.

In 1684, Quebec Jesuits began to cultivate a melon with green flesh and a taste of nutmeg.

100+ years later, in the 19th century, the Décarie and Groman families worked on perfecting the fruit on their farms.

In the early 20th century, the Decarie family popularized the Montreal melon, to the point where a slice of it cost as much as a steak! However, the fruit didn’t adapt well to the food industry’s developments over the course of the century, and the Montreal melon became scarce.

This summer, you’ll be able to find them at Runaway Creek Farm in Arundel, or buy the seeds from Semences Solana and grow them yourself.

Will you be eating Montreal melons this summer?
