Montreal Is Getting 1,000 New Eco-Friendly Buses

It's no news to anyone that Montreal's STM network could use some serious work. There are delays, the buses are overcrowded, they're never on time (I don't think we can do much about that one though).

Public transportation is super important in a city like Montreal, so officials should really be investing their money into the network.

Good news, the wait is over! The city just bought us almost 1,000 new buses!

Montreal's executive committee just approved a plan to spend $1.3 billion on buying 963 new eco-friendly buses. The city will be purchasing 929 hybrid and 34 all-electric buses between 2019 and 2024.

According to the vice-president of the Société de transport de Montréal, there will be 16% more buses on the streets by 2020. That means there's a better chance you'll get to work on time.

Seeing as STM buses are taken off the streets after 16 years, 498 of the new buses will be replacing those we lost. So, if you do the math we're only really getting 465 new buses. But still! I will take it.

These electric buses are also going to help with the upcoming 100% electric route. The 36 Monk will be running from the Angrignon to the Square-Victoria metro station. I think this is definitely a step in the right direction. The more sustainable energy we have on our streets, the better.
