Montreal Police Officers Save Baby From Burning Building

Members of the Montreal police force were nothing short of heroic this morning as several officers plunged into a burning apartment building to rescue a lone toddler.

The dramatic scene took place in the early hours of Thursday morning, at about 12:45am, when SPVM officers were handling an incident in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, reports CBC

Responding immediately (and heroically) the police officers ran to the building, crawling on their hands and knees through the smoke to reach the apartment unit where the fire originate from.

All the while, officers were slamming on the doors of apartments, alerting residents to the imminent danger.

Once the squad of officers reached the unit, they smashed through the door to get inside, only to find a baby girl left all alone in the fiery apartment.

A child of only 18 months (or 12 months, according to The Gazette), the young girl, abandoned by her babysitter, was quickly rushed out of the blaze by the police officers.

Eight officers entered the burning building and eight (thankfully) came out, with the toddler in tow.

Neither the young girl nor the eight police officers suffered serious injuries and all are expected to recover after treatment in the hospital.

But what about the babysitter? What caused the fire?

Police officials say the fire was accidental.

The likely cause was something left on the stove by the babysitter.

According to the police, the babysitter probably left an item on the stove, left the apartment to go into another unit, leaving the toddler alone, and the fire broke out.

A woman aged 50, the babysitter has since been arrested and could be charged with criminal negligence.
