Montreal Ranked #3 Best City In Canada For Public Transit, Toronto Somehow Ranked #1

Montreal Ranked #3 Best City In Canada For Public Transit, Toronto Somehow Ranked #1

Opinions on the STM are divided, especially amongst authorities that rank transit systems. It has been ranked the second best transportation company in Canada by an agency founded upon the precept of "clean capitalism," while USA Today called Montreal one of the best cities in the world for public transit. A little over a year ago the STM was ranked the greenest transit in North America.

A recent ranking by Redfin puts Montreal in third place in its list of Best Canadian Cities for Public Transit. It trails behind Toronto, which places first, and Vancouver in second place.

TL;DR Redfin has ranked the Best Canadian Cities for Public Transit and Montreal ranks in third place.

Redfin, a real estate brokerage company, ranks cities through an algorithm that, in their words, "calculates a score by summing the relative usefulness of public transit (bus, subway, light rail, ferry, etc.) routes near a given location." "Usefulness is defined as the distance to the nearest stop on the route, the frequency of the route, and type of route (with twice as much weight given to heavy/light rail than to bus service)."

Toronto scored 78 points, Vancouver, in second place, scored 74, while Montreal trails far behind with a third-place score of 67.

Not that we think Montreal should have been ranked first, but we are a little suprised that Toronto is in the lead. Apparently, Torontonians are confused too:

TTC ranking as Canada’s best public transit does not say much about the TTC.... at all

March 11, 2019

I guess Toronto hates the TTC as much as Montreal hates the STM. Indeed, the Toronto public transit agency is heavily criticized for its minimal heavy rail network despite the size and population of the city.

According to Redfin, Toronto's TTC, "is one of the better transit systems in the world. It’s highly ranked, runs well on a timely basis, and doesn’t have many problems. And without it, the city would shut down."

When compared to American cities using the same index, this puts Toronto on near equal footing with San Francisco. Montreal, on the other hand, is paired with... Philadelphia.
