Montreal Ranked "Best" Tech City In The World To Live In

Now known as 'Silicon Valley North'.

When you think of Tech Startups, the city that normally comes to mind is Silicon Valley.

But recently, market researchers have been changing the way they evaluate a great tech hub.

Normally these cities would be rated based on much economical opportunity they offer, but the reality is that quality of life is just as important.

Let's not forget that you're not just there to work, you're there to live. And being located near some of the biggest tech companies in the world can actually become a disadvantage because the rent is so high, you'll be spending up to 50% of your salary on a tiny one bedroom apartment.

That's why a company called Expert Market decided to analyze the top 20 tech hubs in the world and ranked them according to the following factors:

  • The time is takes to start a business
  • How much seed funding is available
  • The total activity of entrepreneurship in the region
  • The average salary
  • The cost of living
  • Average rental costs
  • Whether or not employees receive paid vacations
  • Average commute times (uh oh)

When economical factors were the only thing that mattered, the top 5 tech hubs were:

  1. Silicon Valley
  2. New York City
  3. Los Angeles
  4. Boston
  5. Tel Aviv

But once you consider quality of life, the order is very different:

  1. Berlin
  2. Austin
  3. Toronto
  4. San Francisco
  5. Boston
  6. Tel Aviv
  7. Los Angeles
  8. Amsterdam
  9. Montreal
  10. Paris
  11. Bangalore
  12. Seattle
  13. Vancouver
  14. Moscow
  15. Chicago
  16. London
  17. New York City
  18. Sydney
  19. São Paolo
  20. Singapore

Montreal came in at #9, but imagine how much higher we would rank for if there wasn't so much damn traffic everywhere.

And apparently, since we have 3 Canadian cities in the top 20, Canada earned the nickname "Silicon Valley North".
