Montreal Was Supposed To Build A Gondola On Mont-Royal Lookout

Montreal Was Supposed To Build A Gondola On Mont-Royal Lookout

A few years ago, we were trying to think about ways to alleviate traffic in Montreal and we figured, why not take to the skies instead?

We had suggested that Montreal should try installing some urban Gondolas right in the middle of downtown.

Sainte-Catherine street would be the perfect place because you could zip across from one side of downtown to the other, and you could get a bird's eye view of all the street festivals happening in the summer.

Well apparently the idea wasn't that crazy because later on, according to LaPresse, Montreal's chamber of commerce presented a similar project called Skylink.

The idea was to build a gondola that would take you from Parc Jean-Drapeau, all the way to the top of Mont-Royal.

The 4 km route would cross over the business district and could become an awesome new feature for the city.

It's already been proven to work in other cities. London installed an urban chairlift in 2012 and Barcelona has had something similar since 1931. Even Montreal used to have a funicular that rode up the side of Mont-Royal.

Sadly though we haven't heard any news about this project in quite some time, so it seems like it won't be happening any time soon.
