If you like Chinese food then you are in the right city. According to Chef's Pencil, a food website dedicated to recipes and professional cooking advice from chefs, the most popular ethnic cuisine in Montreal is Chinese food. Considering Canada is such a multicultural country, Chef's Pencil wanted to look into the most popular ethnic cuisines in Canada based on findings from Google Trends.
The findings are not solely based on dining out habits; they also show what Canadians are eating at home. Hundreds of thousands of search terms related to the topic in both English and French were taken into account.
According to the report, the top five international cuisines in the province of Quebec are:
1. Chinese (Google Trends Score: 44)
2. Italian (Google Trends Score: 35)
3. Thai (Google Trends Score: 29)
4. Indian (Google Trends Score: 17)
5. Mexican (Google Trends Score: 13)
When it comes to Chinese restaurants in Montreal, we have a lot to choose from, just head to Chinatown to check out the vast amount of spots serving up everything from regional specialties to dumplings, and dim sum.
So, what are some of the best Chinese places to grab a bite? The list is pretty extensive depending on what you're looking for.
Plâts de Pates Hong Mère
Where
:
3795 Rue Wellington, Verdun
You don't go for the ambiance, you go for the exceptional food. This Verdun neighbourhood spot is family run and serves up some of the best home-cooked Szechuan dishes in the city.
Nouilles de Lan Zhou
Where: 1006 Blvd. St-Laurent
This small restaurant in Chinatown is known for its noodles (which you can see them make in the window display). You can even choose the noodle type, and if you want to get really picky, you can even choose the thickness.
Cuisine Aunt Dai
Where: 1448 Rue St-Mathieu
A Montreal favourite, Cuisine Aunt Dai specializes in Szechuan cuisine but also has North American style Chinese food — something the owner lets you know through his personal reviews on the menu. Yep, the owner writes a hilarious take on each one of their dishes.
Keung Kee
Where: 70 Rue de la Gauchetière O.
This is your typical Cantonese-style restaurant complete with round tables and a rotating tray in the middle. But once you taste the food (especially the clams), you'll realize that they are ahead of the rest. Make sure to book a table, unless you like lines, or order online from one of its delivery partners.
The best part is, on Friday and Saturday they are open until 2 a.m.
Restaurant Impérial
Where: 6th floor, 998 Blvd. St-Laurent
There are some great dim sum restaurants around the city to choose from. But if you want something that's a little more modern in its decor (prices tend to skew a little higher because of this) but still manages to serve tasty and authentic dishes, then this is the restaurant for you.
La Maison VIP
Where: 1077 Rue Clark
Every city needs one: a late-night Chinese restaurant to stumble into after a few drinks out on the town. La Maison VIP is open every night until 3:30 a.m. to quench all your cravings. It's more North American-style Chinese food, but it is amazing. And when you see how low your bill is at the end, you'll love it even more.
Happy eating!
