You head to a Montreal bar when you want to grab a bite, grab a drink, and catch up with friends. But where do you go when you're also feeling a bit of a competitive urge, or when you want to be more proactive or adventurous in life that still includes imbibing and not having to move too far away from a table and chairs? Well, you still head to a pub — just a different kind of pub.
But, even if you want a throwback to simpler days where the drinks don't usually have more than three ingredients and the games don't have too many rules, Montreal still manages to come through.
We took a look at some of the pubs and bars in the city for when you want a side of fun with your drinks. There is everything from the best place to play a game of pool with friends to compete in your very own five-minute play.
So, the next time you're in the mood for more than the usual pub grub, check out these seven Montreal spots that are known for something a little extra.
Go For The "Best Damn Night Of Trivia" at Grumpy’s Bar
Where: 1242, rue Bishop

Sing Some Karaoke at Bar Sel et Poivre
Where: 5228, rue d'Iberville
If you aren't about the on-trend vibe and more of an old-school, simply cool kinda person, Sel et Poivre is your new spot. It's mostly a French crowd, so it's the perfect time to get acquainted and practice some Jean Leloup.
Shoot Pool At Fitzroy
Where: 551, ave. Mont-Royal E.
With 15 pool tables to choose from, you won't have to wait too long for a table. There are also foosball tables to choose from at this relaxed but trendy bar.
Videogames at Arcade MTL
Where: 2031, rue Saint-Denis
Take a trip back to your childhood with a bar jammed with all those vintage arcade games you used to play like Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and Tetris. There is a $7 entrance fee, but that gives you access to all the games.
Board Games at Randolph Pub Ludique Quartier Latin
Where: 2041, rue Saint-Denis (check out all the locations)
It's nearly surprising that more bars don't have board games. What goes better than drinks while challenging friends to games that run the gamut of skills and dexterity to abstract brain-teasers. There's also a $7 entrance fee — just to warn you.
Ride A Bull at Chez Serge
Where: 4281, blvd. Saint-Laurent
Who hasn't had that late-night urge to wrap their thighs around a mechanical bull and ride eight seconds of Luke Perry induced fun? Well, here you go.
Play Darts At Le Colonel Moutarde
Where: 4418, rue Saint-Denis
There is no chance of getting bored at this Plateau spot. You can play a game of darts or check out one of 500 board games. If you don't know the rules, ask one of the "game sommeliers."
Have fun — and no cheating. Santé!
