There is very little quite as inviting as a hot chocolate on a cold day. While I rarely think twice about the drink during the summer months, as soon as the weather changes to fall, it becomes a nagging obsession.
Montreal has no shortages of chocolatiers and patisseries serving up the hot stuff, but I wanted to find the best of the best in our city.
There is truly every type of hot cocoa being served up: classics, vegan, gluten-free, alcoholic, and flavoured with everything under the (winter) sun. They can range in prices from the cheap (though not on taste) $3, all the way up to $12 (if you get it spiked with alcohol). But, one thing doesn't change from all of the places listed, the attention to using only the highest products and ingredients.
These are all restaurants that take their chocolate business seriously. There are the Montreal staples that I couldn't leave out, but also visited some of the lesser-known shops that were recommended by fellow chocoholics — and they did not disappoint.
Sure, there's a lot to do in Montreal during the fall months, but persuing your love for hot chocolate is more than just an activity, it's a lifestyle.
C'ChocoLat

Au Festin de Babette

This Plateau Parisian style restaurant is known for its brunches, but it's the hot chocolate you have to try. This isn't your usual subpar packaged powder, it's the best quality chocolate you'll come by. Try the 55% chocolate Babette with ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom for a wintery feel.
Cacao 70

The hot chocolate list isn't as expansive as some of the others, but it's also because they've fine-tuned what they have to absolute perfection. There is even a spicy hot chocolate, the Mexicocoa.

As a Montreal staple, of course, they would have some of the best hot chocolate in the city. Their all gluten-free options are a velvety, luxurious dream. If you really want a sugar rush, try the smoked campfire hot chocolate that comes with a brownie and toasted marshmallow skewer.

All the hot chocolate is completely vegan-friendly, as is everything on the menu at this bakeshop. The hot chocolate is still made rich and creamy with coconut milk.
