Sure, we all do stupid stuff when we're young and riding high on the freedom of having a car. But can you imagine just how free you have to be feeling to get yourself in the position of earning $1,854 in tickets? Well, for one 18-year-old Montreal driver there's no need to imagine.

And you can rest assured that you don't need to fear this driver on the road, either, because he also had his license suspended.

Plus, he also managed to rack up 18 demerit points.

If you're sitting there thinking, "I didn't even think you could get that many demerit points!" Well, you're not the only one.

I looked it up. In Quebec, there are 3 brackets for demerit points, depending on your age. Drivers that are 25 and older have a 15-point bracket. Drivers who are 23 or 24 have a 12-point bracket. 

But drivers under 23 only have an 8-point bracket, and anyone who exceeds their bracket will have their license revoked.

The SAAQ explains that "certain offences can result in more demerit points than you are allowed to accumulate."

Which is obviously what happened here.

So how did this young man manage to rack up 18 demerit points and a ticket that could pay my rent for nearly three months?

It started with him getting clocked going 101 km/h in a 40 zone in downtown Montreal on December 21, 2019.

The SPVM explains in its Facebook post above that the stop was made "during the holidays, during a night speed operation."

Two officers stopped the driver for his excessive speed and then found that he also had six passengers in the vehicle where there was only room for five.

And it gets worse.

The SPVM does not specify exactly when this stop happened, but according to TVA Nouvelles, it happened at 2:15 a.m.

Because the driver was only 18, he is technically only allowed to have one passenger under the age of 19 in the vehicle between midnight and 5 a.m.

All six of the passengers were only 18.

So it comes as no surprise whatsoever that the young driver had his license immediately suspended in addition to racking up nearly $2,000 in fines and 18 demerit points.

The SAAQ explains that licence holders "can have points entered on their driving record even if they are not behind the wheel."

This means the sixth passenger in the vehicle, who was riding without a seatbelt, may have also received some points.

According to the SAAQ, demerit points remain on a driver's record for 2 years following the date of conviction.

So don't worry. This little speed demon won't be back on the roads for a good long while.
