During these difficult times, we all love a happy news story —especially when the good guy comes in the form of a company like Dollarama or Dominos. The latest round of good guy applause goes to Canadian hockey equipment manufacturer Bauer Hockey for its latest initiative. While there are no professional hockey players to worry about right now, the company has moved its concern to medical professionals who are on the front line of COVID-19.
Bauer has offered to create protective face shields for doctors, nurses, and other first responders.
Bauer, located in Blainville, Quebec, was left wondering how they could put its work to use during the pandemic after the Monday announcement where all nonessential businesses must close until at least April 13.
In a report by RDS, the Blainville, Quebec company has said they currently have enough material to produce 10,000 masks with a production capacity of 2000 masks per day (to begin) and delivery beginning as early as next week. The company will wait on authorization from the provincial government before starting up any production on the medical shields.
With the constant worry about mask and other necessary protective gear shortages for those treating COVID-19, this could be an innovative and desperately needed initiative by a rather unlikely company.
Kudos.
The current medical shield prototypes by Bauer are a one-time use, plastic visor that has anti-fogging material. Regular medical masks that cover the mouth and nose are meant to be warn underneath the plastic guard.
According to ESPN, Bauer already has more than 100,000 orders as of today for masks across Canada.

The company hopes to also put the word out to supply the U.S with the new visors. The cost of a medical shield is approx CAN $4.25, and Bauer does not expect to make any profit.

It's great to see Canadian based companies going above and beyond at this time.
And what the company doesn't make up in immediate profit, it should make up for in the long run for being awesomely Canadian.
