The news of the death of Céline Dion's mother has rocked Canada and especially Quebec, where the matriarch was affectionately known as "Maman Dion," after her cooking show of the same name. Thérèse Dion was mother to 14 children and encouraged musicality in her household. Her support for her daughter — she even co-penned her first single — would launch a career that would take Céline to an estimated net worth of around half a billion dollars.
In response to her death, thousands of fans have taken to Twitter to offer their condolences and share memories of the superstar's mother.
Under the hashtag #MamanDion, Quebecers are also expressing gratitude for Thérèse, who became a local celebrity in her own right.
Her Foundation Maman Dion, whose mission is "to foster the fulfillment, the development of self-esteem and the desire to succeed in school for young Quebecers between the ages of 5 and 16 who come from disadvantaged backgrounds," earned Thérèse the title of "Mother of Quebec."
Thérèse's passing comes four years after the death of her son, Daniel and of René Angélil, Céline's husband.
On Instagram, the Quebec superstar has published her first message since news of her mother's death broke.
"Maman, we love you so much… We dedicate tonight’s show to you and I’ll sing to you with all my heart," she wrote alongside an image of the entire Dion family, including her parents and 13 siblings.
Céline's concert is sure to be sentimental as she and fans bid farewell to Maman Dion.
For many Quebecers who grew up watching the Dions, Thérèse was a national maternal figure.
